20 MARCH 2022

Making & maquettes

Spring is bursting through the sunshine and with it all attention is being put towards events for 2022. Although James works in a variety of materials he has spent a great deal of time exploring scale in the past few years. Works in Bronze, although they offer an endless array of possibilities they also have the confines of practical scale concerns. We were lucky enough to visit Lawrence Edwards studio last year and see his most recent work ‘Yoxman’ in the production stages. At 26 foot, the figure is by far the biggest Bronze that we have ever seen. It has since been completed and was recently installed at the side of the A12 in Suffolk. Its an impressive sight.

Like many artist James often uses marquette’s to gather and develop ideas. He has been working on a series over many years. The pieces all have a different pull to his most familiar themes but sometimes he states ‘The pieces can take on attributes to the people around me’. His most current piece is a development of one began with the birth of his youngest daughter Eva. A piece he has always meant to revisit, James is in the studio looking at the material and methods for scaling up this idea. The piece offers a new set of challenges as the weight balance is planned to be off centre and translating this to a safe and practical solution will be interesting.

Dates of upcoming shows to follow.
